Bid position

Bid position is a boosted proposal's current rank among the bids in a job's boost auction, which Upwork shows live and which decides whether the proposal sits in one of the four promoted slots at that moment.

Updated

Upwork shows two things about a boost while the auction runs: the bid table, which lists what other freelancers are bidding, and the slot, since "the top four bidders at any time" are the ones a client sees at the top of the list. Position one to four means the proposal is promoted now; five or below means it has been outbid and sits in the ordinary list until someone drops or you raise your bid. The position changes whenever another bid arrives, and the proposal also leaves the promoted slots once the client interacts with it, opens it three times without action or sees it five times.

A position is not an outcome. A proposal can be in slot one on day one and out of the four by day six, in which case it is not charged unless the client interacted while it was boosted; it can be in slot four at the close and pay its full bid with no view at all. The "Boosted" badge on a proposal in your list is this position, read at the time you looked.

How Upsight uses it. When the bidder sends with a boost it sizes the bid to the live table and records the position it bought. The settlement later comes from the Connects history: a charge means the boost was held or interacted with, a release without a charge means it was outbid. The proposal list shows the live position while the boost auction runs and the settled result after it, so a reader never mistakes "Boosted" on day two for a result. The pairing of position and outcome is what lets a campaign learn how much a slot is worth on jobs like this one, which feeds the next bid.
