Upwork Time Tracker

The Upwork Time Tracker is the time-logging feature of the Upwork Desktop App that records hours on hourly contracts with screenshots and activity counts, and the main way logged time qualifies for Hourly Protection.

Also written: Time Tracker, Upwork Desktop App time tracker, Upwork tracker.

Turn it on and it logs time against a chosen hourly contract until you stop it. Screenshots are "taken randomly once every 10 minutes when tracking is on", and you can ask to be notified when one is taken. It also records user activity: keystrokes, mouse selects, scrolls and the active application or window name, shown as a green bar per minute under each screenshot. Time without mouse or keyboard activity, such as a call, may not be recorded and may need manual entry.

The freelancer keeps some control over what is uploaded:

  • Screenshots can be removed before upload or later in the work diary, but deleting a screenshot removes that segment's activity.
  • Only two monitors are supported; a second monitor can be enabled in Settings.
  • Camera shots are optional, disabled by default, can only be enabled by the freelancer, and can be deleted without affecting billable time.
  • Memos and activity tags can be edited until the work diary review period ends, 12 hours after the weekly billing period closes.

Upwork deletes screenshots after one year. Its client-facing article says the tracker does not record the applications a freelancer uses; the freelancer article lists the active application or window name among what it tracks.

Tracked time is what Hourly Protection covers. Manual time needs the client's approval and is not eligible. A freelancer whose work is mostly calls or offline will therefore have less protected time on the same contract, which is worth settling with the client before the first week. Everything the tracker records lands in the work diary, which is what the client reviews.
