Invite-only job
An invite-only job is a private Upwork job post that does not appear in searches, so only the freelancers and agencies the client invites can see it and submit a proposal.

Upwork calls these private posts. A client chooses visibility when posting and can change it later. Public posts are visible to all freelancers and agencies and appear in search results; private posts "don't appear in searches", so the client has to find and invite the talent they want. Upwork's posting guide recommends inviting only selected freelancers for best results, with the option to open the post to the marketplace later.
A brake on proposals. A client getting more proposals than they want can switch a public post to private to slow the flow without closing it, and switch it back later. A few proposals may still arrive after the switch, from freelancers who saved the job's link or from search engines outside Upwork that have not yet dropped the page.
What it means for freelancers. You cannot find an invite-only job; it finds you, as an invitation. Accepting or declining an invitation costs no Connects, and the competition is the set of people the client chose rather than the open market. The work you win this way comes from profile visibility and reputation, not from bidding speed.
What it means for counting. Because private jobs never appear in search, no job feed, search scraper or market index can see them. Any figure for how many jobs Upwork has in a category describes public posts only.
How Upsight uses it. Private posts never reach the bidder, because they never appear in search. They reach Upsight through the inbox instead: invitations to every connected login are listed alongside replies and new leads, and counted as leads when they are received.
