Invitation

An invitation is a client's direct request that a freelancer or agency submit a proposal to a job, delivered as a message, which costs no Connects to accept or decline.

Upwork's article calls it "a direct message from a client inviting you to discuss their job and submit a proposal". "Accepting or declining an invitation costs no Connects", declining "won't affect future invitations", and Upwork may withdraw an invitation itself if there is a problem with the client or the job. Invitations live under Find Work, Proposals and offers, Invitations to apply, and also reach you through the bell icon.

Accepting means sending a proposal: you keep the client's terms or propose new ones, add a cover letter and attachments, and the invitation becomes an active proposal with its own message room once the client responds. Some invitations ask for a Uma video interview instead of a cover letter. Declining asks for a reason and allows a message; Upwork warns never to share contact details in it. For an agency, the invited member and a business manager are placed in the room with the client, or the owner if the agency has no business manager.

Invitations are the cheapest lead on Upwork and the hardest to count. The record Upwork keeps says Pending long after an invitation was accepted, a same-day invitation is not yet visible in the Connects history, and a quick accept may never be crawled; the invitation email is often the only evidence.

How Upsight uses it. Upsight's inbox lists invitations alongside replies and new leads, reads both the invitation record and the notification email, and counts an invitation as a lead when it was received rather than guessing whether it was accepted; the per-member funnel shows invitations as their own line.
