Outbid
Outbid is the state of a boosted Upwork proposal that other freelancers have bid more Connects than, so it drops out of the four promoted slots into the ordinary list, and it is charged for the boost only if the client interacted with it while it was still boosted.

Upwork's rule is short: "If you're outbid during the auction, your proposal will no longer be shown as boosted", and it stays visible lower on the list. If the client had an eligible interaction while it held a slot, the boost is charged; if not, only the standard Connects to submit the proposal are charged. Eligible interactions include the client opening, shortlisting, messaging, sending an offer, archiving or declining.
Outbid is a moment, not a verdict. The boost auction runs for up to seven days or until the first hire, bids keep arriving, and a proposal outbid in the first hour can be back in a slot later when others drop out. The "Boosted" badge on your proposal list is a bid position at the moment it was read, so a list that says outbid on day one is often wrong by the close. Only the Connects history at the close settles it.
Being outbid is not the same as wasting a boost. While it led, the proposal sat in a promoted slot, and views earned there still count. In our own ledger outbid boosts were among the cheapest views per Connect of any group, because the bid came back. That does not make losing the slot a strategy, since a held slot is seen for longer, but it means an outbid rate is not a loss rate.
How Upsight uses it. Upsight shows "outbid for now" while an auction is open and "outbid" only once the auction has settled with nothing charged, read from the Connects ledger, and it reports the views and replies of outbid boosts beside those of held ones.
