Account suspension

An account suspension is Upwork restricting or revoking an account's access after a Terms of Service violation or an unresolved account issue, ranging from a temporary limit the user can clear themselves to a permanent block.

Upwork's account health hub shows two separate readings. Platform access is what you can do now: Normal; Restricted, where some features are limited until you take action; or Revoked, where the account is suspended and needs an appeal. Account standing is how close you are to losing access: Good, At risk, High risk or Blocked.

What triggers it. Recent policy violations, identity verification holds, payment or billing issues and some compliance checks all affect access. Upwork weighs violations by type, severity and risk rather than counting strikes. A serious one, such as trying to take work off-platform, can drop standing at once, and some policies are zero tolerance.

Getting access back. If you can still log in, the suspension banner gives the reason and may offer a self-service fix, such as verifying your ID or updating a payment method. Otherwise you reply to the suspension email or use Upwork's appeal form. Upwork says most appeals are reviewed within two business days and asks people not to file duplicate tickets. An appeal succeeds only if it shows a mistake or brings new information that "significantly changes the facts originally reviewed"; disagreement alone is unlikely to work. A suspension over ongoing client feedback concerns needs a six-month wait before an appeal.

Restored is not clean. Getting access back does not clear the record. Upwork says the violation stays in the account's history and can keep standing at At risk until it expires, and it does not share how long that takes.

Never open a second account. Upwork says opening a new account after a suspension is itself a violation; see multiple accounts.

The narrower, usually fixable limit is an account on hold; the rules behind most suspensions are under Terms of Service.
