Multiple accounts

Upwork allows one account per person for life, so opening a second account, including after closing or losing access to the first, violates its Terms of Service; freelancer, agency and client profiles all sit inside that one account instead.

Also written: Two Upwork accounts, Second Upwork account, Duplicate accounts.

Upwork gives its reasons: several accounts could be used to avoid or hide poor feedback, misrepresent skills or hiring history, or get around its rules on contracts, payments and reviews. The consequence it names is suspension.

What fits inside one account. One freelancer profile, one agency account, and multiple client accounts, for example one per business you hire for. You switch between them with the same login.

What is never allowed.

  • A new account after deleting the old one, or reusing the same email address to open one.
  • A new account because you forgot your login; Upwork says to recover the existing one.
  • A new account years later; the old one still exists and is the one to use.
  • A new account after a suspension, which Upwork treats as a further violation; a permanent block closes any new account as well.

If you created a second main account by accident, Upwork says not to use both and to close one.

Documented exceptions. Upwork will consider more than one account, with documentation sent to Customer Support, when you hire for an employer that requires its corporate email domain and hiring permissions, when you pay taxes as a freelancer in more than one country, or when a client or an agency you work with requires an account on its corporate email domain.

Related rules. The Trust and Safety hub adds two: only you use your account, and you must not hire yourself from another account. Agency owners must never ask a member for their login; members are managed through roles, see agency member, and an account restriction is covered under account suspension.
