Upwork's limits for each item: a title of up to 70 characters, a role of up to 100, a project description of up to 600, and up to five skill and deliverable tags that tell clients what the sample demonstrates. Content can be images, video, audio, documents or links to external sites. For images Upwork recommends 1000 by 750 pixels, with a minimum of 400 by 300 and a maximum of 4000 by 4000.

Linking an Upwork job. An item can name a related Upwork contract for credibility. Upwork notifies the past client, who can review it, and the item is added once the client approves or after three days pass. Editing a linked item notifies the client again. Only end-of-contract feedback shows on a linked item; mid-contract feedback stays in the work history.

Drafts and publishing. Save as draft keeps an item in the Drafts tab, where clients cannot see it; Publish makes it visible. A red exclamation mark next to a link means Upwork could not build a preview image, and the link still works.

What Upwork asks for. Show your best work rather than everything, name the skills and technologies used, remove outdated samples, and keep contact details out of files and linked sites, as on the rest of the profile.

The portfolio now carries more weight in the proposal itself: since Upwork retired specialized profiles, the items that best match a job post are shown to that client first.

How Upsight uses it. Bidder's Client View shows the portfolio as the client sees it beside each sent proposal, and Upsight's profile score reads portfolio titles, descriptions and tags against the keywords a profile is tracked for.
