Talent search

A client can start a talent search from the search bar on any Upwork page, then refine it with Advanced Search, which applies Boolean operators automatically, or with filters. Upwork's filters include talent the client or company has hired before or saved, talent quality through talent badges, hourly rate and location by region, country, city or time zone, with a U.S.-only option for U.S. clients. Clients can also restrict results to freelancers or to agencies, to talent open to contract-to-hire, or to particular skills and languages. The separate Discover page shows recommendations built from the client's job post rather than from a typed query.

How results are ordered. Upwork's description is short: the algorithm "uses both platform-generated data", such as the number of completed projects and client feedback, and freelancer-generated information, such as descriptions of the services offered. Depending on the search, it may also weigh the query, the selected filters and the job post. That is all Upwork publishes. It gives no weights, no list of every factor and no formula, so any claim about the exact ranking recipe is a guess.

Paid placement sits alongside. A profile boost buys a promoted spot in relevant searches through an auction, separate from the organic order.

Who is not in it. A private profile never appears in talent search, though a client with the link can still open it.

How Upsight uses it. Upsight reads the public talent search for every tracked keyword each day and records where each tracked profile sits, which is its keyword rank, plus who is on page one and what their tiles show. A profile not found within the scanned depth is recorded as a measurement, not as missing data.
