Availability
Availability on an Upwork profile is the hours-per-week setting a freelancer chooses in the profile sidebar to tell clients how much time they can give, and it is separate from the paid Availability Badge.

Also written: Hours per week, Available hours.
You set it from Your profile: scroll the side panel to Hours per week, select the pencil icon and choose your hours. Upwork gives four reasons to keep it visible: it sets clear expectations about deadlines, it builds trust, it speeds up hiring decisions, and it can help you appear in relevant searches, since "our algorithm may use availability" alongside skills and job success.
Keep it current. Upwork's tips are to be accurate and update it when your week changes, and to show it even when your time is limited, because some clients want only a few hours from the right person. Up-to-date availability is also one of the conditions Upwork lists for Top Rated.
Not the badge. The Availability badge is a different product: a paid "Available now" marker charged in Connects every week at a market price. The hours-per-week setting is free, is always part of the profile, and says how much time you have; the badge says you are free to start now and is an ad. A profile can have one without the other.
What Upwork does not say. The word "may" is all Upwork commits to. It does not publish whether a higher figure ranks better than a lower one, or how much the setting weighs in talent search against skills, Job Success Score or anything else.
How Upsight uses it. Upsight's profile score checks whether a tracked profile has its hours per week filled in. Separately, the Lineup toolkit can switch the paid badge on and off on a schedule, which is a decision about spending Connects, not about this setting.
