Client location

Client location is the country, and where known the city and time zone, that Upwork shows for a client on job posts and to freelancers the client messages, which says where the client is, not where the freelancer must be.

Upwork lists "Your city, country, and time zone" among the facts a freelancer sees about a client who sends a direct message, and the same location appears in the About the client section of a job post. Upwork does not publish a page explaining how the location is set or checked for clients.

Client location is not a talent requirement. A separate setting on the job decides who may apply. Upwork lets U.S. clients limit applications to U.S.-based freelancers; other clients can name preferred countries, but anyone can still apply. So a client in one country can post a job open worldwide, and a job can be restricted no matter where the client sits. Read the job's own qualifications for the rule, and the client location for context.

Reading it. Location tells you about working hours, language, currency habits and which invitations or rates make sense. The time zone matters more than the country for an hourly job with daily calls. A location that does not match the rest of the post, such as the language of the brief or the hours a client asks for, is worth a second look, though it proves nothing on its own.

How Upsight uses it. A campaign can include or exclude client countries in its Client tab, with common spellings of a country treated as one, and the suitability scorer is shown the client's country with the rest of the client record. Upsight keeps the client's city and time zone on the job record as Upwork gives them.
