Client

A client on Upwork is the person or company that posts jobs, invites and hires freelancers or agencies, funds the contracts and pays for the work, and whose hiring record a freelancer reads in the About the client section of each job post.

Also written: Upwork client, Buyer.

Upwork sets three expectations for clients: post jobs that are "real and accurate", do not expand the work or change agreed terms without the freelancer's consent, and keep payments up to date. Its help center names the breaches it acts on: ghost job posts with no real intent to hire, posts that misrepresent the work or the budget, duplicate posts left active at the same time, contract changes the freelancer did not agree to, and a pattern of paying late. A freelancer who meets one can report it from the job post or from Messages, and Upwork looks for the agreement written down on the platform.

What a freelancer sees. Before a proposal, the job post is the only view of who is hiring. The client panel carries whether the billing method is verified, the client location, the client rating and reviews, jobs posted and hire rate, total spend, average hourly rate paid and the date the client joined. Each field has its own entry here. A client who has never hired has no spend, rating or hire rate to show, which is a different state from a poor record.

Plans. A client hires on the free Basic plan, on the paid Business Plus plan, or as an Enterprise client under its own agreement. The plan sets the client's fees and hiring tools.

How Upsight uses it. Every job Upsight takes in carries the client's fields with it, and a campaign's Client tab filters on them: countries, payment and phone verification, minimum rating and reviews, company size, total spent, hire rate, average hourly rate paid and recent contracts. The same fields are put in front of the suitability scorer when it reads the job.
