Hourly rate
The hourly rate on an Upwork profile is the asking price per hour a freelancer shows clients, a figure clients can filter search results by, which does not bind the freelancer's proposals or change existing contracts.

Upwork describes it as a baseline: it "gives clients a general sense of your pricing" and helps them filter search results, but does not lock you into one rate. You can change it at any time, and the change does not touch current contracts or proposals. Some freelancers set a different bid amount on each proposal; others treat the profile rate as the opening point of a negotiation.
What the form shows. When you set the rate, Upwork also shows the Freelancer Service Fee that will be deducted and the amount you will receive. The rate on the profile is the client-facing figure, before the fee. Upwork notes the fee varies and does not print a single figure in this guide.
How to pick one. Upwork's own suggestion is to look at the profiles of freelancers who offer similar work, and to use Freelancer Plus insights to see what others are bidding. It publishes no recommended rate by category in the profile guide.
It stays public. Freelancer Plus lets you hide total billings and contract rates in your work history, but not the hourly rate at the top of the profile, so this is the one price every client sees before contacting you.
How Upsight uses it. Upsight records the rate each tracked profile shows in search every day, next to its earnings and jobs, and the profile score places the rate against the profiles ranked for the same keyword, labelling it underpriced, aligned or premium rather than telling anyone to cut it.
