Hours worked

Hours worked is the total of hours a freelancer has logged on Upwork, shown on the profile beside total earnings, which Upwork describes as an estimate based on logged contract activity.

Upwork says little about this figure, and only on its earnings page: the "total earnings and hours displayed on your profile are based on logged contract activity", may not reflect refunds, and "are estimates and may not always be exact". There is no help article that defines hours worked on its own.

Where the hours come from. Logged time belongs to hourly contracts, where freelancers record time in the work diary through the Upwork time tracker or as manual time. Fixed-price contracts and Project Catalog orders are paid per milestone or per order and log no hours, so a freelancer who works mostly fixed-price can show substantial earnings with few hours. Upwork does not say outright whether any fixed-price work is converted into hours, so read a low figure with that in mind.

What it can and cannot tell a client. Hours show how much billed time has passed through Upwork, not how long someone has freelanced or how experienced they are. Dividing total earnings by hours does not give an hourly rate either, because total earnings also include fixed-price and Project Catalog work.

What Upwork does not say. It does not say whether hours are a factor in talent search, how disputed or refunded time is removed, or whether hours from agency contracts appear on the member's profile, the agency's or both.

How Upsight uses it. Upsight records the hours each tracked profile shows in search every day, beside its total earnings and jobs completed, so changes in all three can be followed over time on the same chart.
