On Upwork an interview is a conversation, not necessarily a scheduled call. When a client messages an applicant from the job post, Upwork moves that applicant to the client's Messaged section and embeds the thread in the proposal view. From there the client can chat, call or hold a video interview in Upwork Messages, including Zoom. An invitation the freelancer accepts opens the same kind of conversation. The Interviewing line on the job post counts those conversations.
Upwork does not define the Interviewing figure on a help page of its own; this definition follows from how its interview flow works.
Why it matters. Interviewing is the clearest public signal of where a job is in its life. None at all, with plenty of proposals, means the client has not started reviewing or has stopped. A few means a shortlist is forming. Many means a decision is close, and a new proposal arrives after the conversations that matter have started.
Rules that apply. All direct communication must begin on Upwork, and contact details cannot be shared in profiles, proposals or job posts. Enterprise clients have more leeway, but the conversation still has to start in Upwork Messages.
How Upsight uses it. Upsight records the interviewing count with each reading of a job, beside invites sent and the proposals range. A late-bidding campaign can require that no more than a set number of freelancers are in interview at its check age; one preset waits eight hours and bids only while the client is active and has barely started interviewing. When the client writes back, the reply lands in Upsight's inbox as a new lead.
