Proposals range

The proposals range is the band, not an exact number, that an Upwork job post shows under Activity on this job for how many proposals the client is currently considering.

Every job post opens its Activity on this job panel with the proposal count as a range. Upwork's proposal insights article says what the range holds: "relevant proposals currently being considered by the client". That means organic proposals plus invitations the freelancer replied to, minus anything withdrawn, declined or archived, so the band can fall as well as rise.

Two counts, two sources. Proposal insights, for Freelancer Plus accounts, give an exact count of organic proposals with how many the client opened, shortlisted and messaged, updated hourly. They leave out client invitations, unanswered invites and replied invitations. The job page includes replied invitations. Upwork says the two numbers "will naturally differ".

The bands are not documented. Upwork publishes no list of the range boundaries on its help pages, and a band hides what happens inside it: a job at the low edge and one at the high edge look the same.

How to read it. The count means most against time. The same band one hour after posting and three days after posting describes two different jobs. Read it with the interviewing count, the invites sent, when the client last viewed the post, and the client's hire rate.

How Upsight uses it. Upsight reads the exact applicant count Upwork's job data carries rather than the band, at fixed ages after posting, and averages the reading nearest twelve hours into proposals at 12 hours, its keyword difficulty score. Late-bid campaigns test the same count at 1, 4, 8 or 12 hours before deciding to bid.
