For freelancers Uma is a chat that reviews, suggests, analyses and writes: Upwork names proposals, brainstorming and repetitive work. On the free plan it allows "a limited number of queries", about 10 messages a week with an alert at half the limit; Freelancer Plus or Agency Plus unlocks full use. Chat logs are kept for 90 days, and Upwork recommends telling clients when generative AI was used. In the proposal flow, Uma-generated proposals "are fully customizable" and Uma can proofread a draft of yours; Upwork notes they "aren't available to all freelancers".
On the client side, Uma Recruiter produces a shortlist of matching freelancers, "usually within hours", for public jobs outside the legal category, always on Business Plus and sometimes on Basic; it is in beta. Uma also runs video interviews when a client opts in: freelancers answer recorded questions of five to ten minutes, and some invitations require that interview in place of a cover letter.
Uma writes one proposal when you ask it to. It does not watch the feed, choose which jobs to bid on, pick a member, size a boost or keep a record of what each proposal cost.
How Upsight uses it. Upsight's bidder is the always-on part: it watches the feed, scores jobs against what the agency wins, writes from the agency's own knowledge base and holds the draft for a person in approval mode. Upsight has no dependency on Uma, and Uma remains available to any member who wants to edit a draft by hand.
