Search volume
Search volume, on Upsight, is the number of Upwork job postings published in a period that contain a keyword as a phrase in the title, a skill tag or the description, because Upwork publishes no figure for how often clients search a term.

Upwork's job search matches keywords, categories and skills, and its advanced search offers an exact phrase option that returns only posts that "use that exact phrase word-for-word". What Upwork does not publish, for jobs or for talent, is how many people search a term. Any tool that shows a search volume for Upwork is showing something else, usually a count of job posts.
Upsight shows that count and says so in the note beside it. It is counted from the full marketplace feed the bidder already reads, not from Upwork's logged-out job search, which returns a small and stale sample. A post counts for a keyword when the keyword appears as a phrase, the way a quoted search works, with ordinary English stemming and a slash read as a space, so "UI designer" matches "UX/UI Designer". Words scattered across a long description do not count, because that turns a niche term into a large one.
The figure is shown for the last seven days with an arrow against the seven before, and over thirty days as a sparkline. Only days that were actually counted are compared: a keyword added this week has uncounted days, not empty ones.
Read it with its partner. A keyword with many postings and a high keyword difficulty is a crowded market. Few postings and low difficulty can still be the better place to bid, if the agency's keyword rank there is strong.
How Upsight uses it. Search volume sits beside each keyword in rank tracking and keyword research, and a campaign setup previews how many recent jobs its keywords and filters would have caught before it is saved.
