How fast do Upwork jobs fill? We followed 99,667 jobs hour by hour
An Upwork job has more than half of its twelve-hour proposals within the first hour, and most clients who interview start early. Hires come slower than the crowd.
The average job gains 11.6 proposals in its first hour and 9.2 in the eleven hours after.

Upwork jobs fill fast. Across 99,667 jobs posted between 4 October and 2 November 2026, the average job had 11.6 proposals one hour after posting and 20.8 after twelve. On jobs read at every age, 55% of the twelve-hour total arrived in the first hour and 81% within four. Interviews start early too: 29% of jobs were interviewing at one hour. Hires come slower: 8.6% had hired by twelve hours, and the final hire rate is not measurable from this panel.

Half the twelve-hour crowd arrives in the first hour
The proposal count on an Upwork job is front-loaded. Across every job with a reading at each age, the mean was 11.6 proposals at one hour, 16.9 at four, 19.3 at eight and 20.8 at twelve. The median job is smaller, at 6, 10, 12 and 13, because a minority of crowded jobs pulls the mean up: one job in ten had 48 or more proposals at twelve hours.
The pace drops off within hours. On the 60,798 jobs read at all four ages, the first hour brought 11.46 proposals on average. The next three hours added 5.39, about 1.8 an hour. Hours four to eight added 2.46, about 0.6 an hour, and hours eight to twelve added 1.55, about 0.4 an hour. A job's first hour draws more proposals than its next eleven hours combined.
Put as shares of the final half-day count, 55.0% of the twelve-hour proposals were in at the one-hour reading, 80.8% by four hours and 92.6% by eight. For the typical single job the picture is the same: among jobs with at least five proposals at twelve hours, the median job already had half of them at one hour.
The twelve-hour figure is the same marketplace average our category study reports, and the shape holds inside it. Software jobs that end the half-day at 50 proposals and legal jobs that end at 7 both get the bulk of them early. Upsight reads this count per keyword as proposals at 12 hours.
Where a typical job stands at each age
A freelancer looking at a job post sees a band, not a count: the proposals range under Activity on this job, which Upwork's proposal insights article describes as the relevant proposals the client is currently considering. We grouped the exact counts the same way.
At one hour, 44.2% of jobs had fewer than five proposals and 3.8% already had 50 or more. By twelve hours the quiet share had halved to 22.3%, and the 50-plus share had grown to 9.5%. Jobs with 20 or more proposals went from 17.4% of the market at one hour (13.6% plus 3.8%) to 34.7% at twelve (25.2% plus 9.5%).
The quiet tail matters. At twelve hours, 40.4% of jobs still had fewer than ten proposals (22.3% under five plus 18.1% at five to nine). Upwork's own job digest email works the same seam: it sends jobs that are public, have fewer than ten recommended freelancers who have proposed, and have no hire yet.
“public jobs with no hires at the time that they are sent”
Jobs under five proposals fall from 44% at one hour to 22% at twelve.

Interviews start before most proposals are in
Clients do not wait for the crowd. 29.3% of jobs showed at least one freelancer interviewing at the one-hour reading, 39.2% at four hours, 43.4% at eight and 45.6% at twelve. On Upwork an interview is a conversation, not necessarily a call: the interviewing count on a post counts the freelancers the client is talking to.
Read the other way, the first hours decide who gets talked to. Among the jobs read at every age that were interviewing by twelve hours, 60.1% were already interviewing at one hour and 84.0% by four. If a client is going to start conversations in the first half-day, it usually starts them before most of the proposals have arrived.
Hires are slower and rarer. 2.90% of jobs showed a hire at one hour, 6.22% at four, 7.68% at eight and 8.57% at twelve, about one job in twelve. On the jobs read at every age, 5.98% had hired by four hours against 8.51% by twelve, so 70% of the hires made in the first half-day were made in its first four hours.
Interviewing climbs from 29% to 46% of jobs in twelve hours; hires reach 8.6%.

Invitations mark the jobs that move
Most clients who invite freelancers do it at once. 41.0% of jobs had at least one client invite at the one-hour reading, and only 44.0% at twelve hours. A standard job post comes with 30 free invites and a Featured Job allows 70 a day, according to Upwork's guide to inviting freelancers, so the cap is rarely what holds a client back.
Invites separate active clients from passive ones. 78.5% of jobs with a client invite were interviewing by twelve hours, against 19.8% of jobs without one, four times as often. Part of that gap is the invitees themselves, since a client talking to someone it invited counts as interviewing. Either way, a job with invites sent has a client at the keyboard, and a shortlist that may already be forming without you.
The most crowded jobs are not the most active
More proposals does not mean more conversations. Among jobs read at every age, those with 10 to 19 proposals at twelve hours were the most likely to be interviewing, at 51.6%. Jobs with 50 or more proposals were interviewing 41.4% of the time, and jobs with fewer than five, 33.1%.
Both ends have a plain reading. A job with under five proposals at twelve hours often has a client who has gone quiet, or a post the crowd judged weak. A job with 50 or more has a client with more letters than it can read, which is where a proposal needs to be early, boosted, or both. The middle is where clients are engaging with the proposals they get.
Jobs with 10 to 19 proposals are the most likely to be interviewing at twelve hours.

How jobs ended, and why the final hire rate is out of reach
Most jobs outlive the half-day. 88.7% of the 99,667 jobs were still open when they aged out of the hourly sweep, at a median 27.1 hours old. At that last reading 12.9% of them showed a hire and 53.0% were interviewing.
Only 6,030 jobs ended inside the window with a status Upwork reported back: 1,469 marked filled, a median 6.5 hours after posting, and 4,561 closed, a median 9.1 hours after. Across both, the median was 8.4 hours, with a quarter ending inside 2.8 hours and three quarters inside 20.0. Clients close a post from their job list with Remove posting, as Upwork's guide to closing a job shows, and a closed status does not say whether anyone was hired.
So this panel cannot tell you what share of Upwork jobs end in a hire. The jobs still open at 27 hours are most of the market, and their outcome lands after we stop reading them hourly. Upwork does not publish a marketplace hire rate either. What a job post does show is the client's own hire rate on past posts, which is the per-job number to read.

What this means for when to bid
The curve gives two good times to bid and one bad one. Early, in the first hour, a proposal joins a median of six others and lands while the client is still opening proposals. Late on purpose, at eight or twelve hours, a proposal targets the 40% of jobs still under ten proposals, filtered for a client who is still active. The bad time is the middle by accident: a proposal four hours in on a busy job arrives after 81% of the crowd and after most first conversations have started.
The sends of one agency point the same way. These are Vizio AI's own applications, the agency that builds Upsight, from 1 August to 26 October 2026; campaigns chose their timing, so this is not a controlled test. Views fell as sends got later. Past four hours, replies are too few to rank, and the 12-hour-plus row is late-bid campaigns that picked jobs still unfilled.

Be inside the first hour on crowded keywords
On a job that will reach 40 or 50 proposals, the first hour is when yours is one of a handful. That needs a watch that runs while you sleep: Upwork's instant job alerts are tied to Freelancer Plus and to proposals you sent as an individual, not through an agency. See when Upwork jobs are posted for the hours that matter.
- 2
Read the activity panel before you pay
Interviewing already under way, invites sent and the client's last view tell you whether a job is moving. A job with invites is four times as likely to be interviewing at twelve hours, which means an active client and, often, a shortlist.
- 3
Bid late on purpose, with filters
At twelve hours 22.3% of jobs have fewer than five proposals. Late bidding means choosing among them: no hire yet, a client active in the last hours, invites out. Without those filters a late proposal is just a slow one.
- 4
Boost early or not at all
Upwork's boost auction closes after seven days or upon first hire, per How to boost your proposal. With 70% of half-day hires inside four hours, a boosted proposal on a crowded job earns most in its first hours. The numbers are in is boosting worth it.
- 5
Measure your own speed
Track the time from posting to send, your speed to bid, next to your view and reply rates. If your median send is three hours after posting, you are bidding into the part of the curve where most clients have started talking.
Upsight's campaigns sweep the job feed every 15 minutes, score each job against criteria the agency writes, and draft from the agency's knowledge profile and best-matched case studies, so a proposal can land in the first hour. Any campaign can require a person to approve every proposal before it is sent. On a busy keyword, that review time is time the job keeps filling, and the curve above is the price of it.
How we measured it
Questions
How many proposals does an Upwork job get in the first hour?
Across 85,790 jobs read about an hour after posting in October 2026, the mean was 11.6 proposals and the median 6. 44.2% of jobs had fewer than five, and 3.8% already had 50 or more. By twelve hours the mean was 20.8.
How fast do Upwork clients hire?
Slower than they interview. 8.57% of jobs showed a hire twelve hours after posting, against 45.6% interviewing. Among jobs read at every age, 70% of the hires made by twelve hours came within four. Of the jobs that ended inside our window, the 1,469 marked filled took a median 6.5 hours.
Is it too late to apply to an Upwork job after 24 hours?
Not automatically. 88,404 jobs were still open when our hourly sweep stopped following them, at a median 27.1 hours old; at that last reading 12.9% showed a hire and 53.0% were interviewing. Check the interviewing count and when the client last viewed the post before spending Connects.
What percentage of Upwork jobs end in a hire?
Upwork does not publish one, and our panel cannot measure it: 88.7% of jobs were still open when we stopped reading them hourly, at about a day old. What we can say is that 8.57% had hired within twelve hours. The client's own hire rate on the job post is the best per-job guide.
Does an invite on an Upwork job mean the client has already chosen someone?
It means the client went looking. 44.0% of jobs had at least one client invite by twelve hours, and 78.5% of those were interviewing by then, against 19.8% of jobs without invites. Some of that interviewing is with the invitees, so a shortlist may be forming.

When are Upwork jobs posted, and when should you bid?
Upwork's busiest five hours are 14:00 to 19:00 UTC, and weekends post 43% fewer jobs a day. The hour a job appears barely changes its final crowd; it changes its first hour.

How many proposals does an Upwork job get? We measured 79,245 jobs
Twelve hours after posting, the average Upwork job has 20.8 proposals. In AI integration work it has 61.6; in photography, 6.2. Where you bid decides how crowded the room is.

What predicts a reply to an Upwork proposal? We measured 9,816 of ours
4.9% of our cold applications got a reply; 76% of our invitation responses did. Boosts, speed, weekends and client history moved the odds. Letter length, questions and an AI fit score did not.
